Martínez Alesanco
Rioja Alta
The Martínez Alesanco family has been engaged in wine making since many centuries. Their name is laced to the town of Badarán and the neighboring town of Alesanco, which has the same name as the family.
Located in Rioja Alta, in the highest elevation vineyards in Rioja DOCA, the elevation ranges from 500m and 720m from sea level. This guarantees that high quality wines will continue to be produced even with the higher temperatures of climate change. The daily high to low temperature peak will be very pronounced, benefiting the slow maturation of the grapes and increasing the quality of these.
During the winter months temperatures can be extremely cold, with snow being a good ally. It is said snow cleans and purifies the vineyards.
The soil of the vineyards are clay soils, typical from Rioja's elegant wines.
12% of the vineyards are over 80 years old in this region of Rioja, considered the highest percentage of old vineyards in the world. In the photo, a low yielding, over 90 years old vine.
